Military Time can be very confusing when you first learn about it. You might not understand its practical uses or you might have trouble translating 24 hour time into 12 hour time. But no matter what your difficulty is, this website is going to make you a master of understanding Military Time.
The first thing you should know is that Military Time (24 hour time) is used in many different fields where its necessary to know the exact time so there is never any discrepancy. Obviously the Military was the first to really pioneer the use of 24 hour time, but its also widely used by the police, the medical industry, and virtually anywhere else you need a precise measurement of time.
However, that doesn’t change the fact that it can be a little tricky to understand if your new to it. That’s why I’m going to give you a HUGE tip that will save you loads of time and effort when trying to convert Military Time in your head or on the spot.
Easy Military Time Converter Tip
Subtract or add 12 hours from the current time. That’s literally all you have to do depending on the time. So, for example, if the time were 23:45 you would simply subtract 12 from that and get 11:45pm. See how simple that was?
On the contrary, if you wanted to convert 12 hour time to 24 hour time, you would add 12 to it. For example, if the time was 1:23pm and you wanted to convert that to Military Time you would simply add 12 and the time would become 13:23.
Follow this one little tip and you will never have a problem converting Military Time to Civilian Time ever again.
Lazy Way To Convert Military Time

The 24 Hour Clock is a method of time telling that goes from Midnight to Midnight, divided into 24 hours and is indicated by the amount of hours passed from Midnight, or 0 to 23. This is by far the most widely used time telling system in the entire world, yet in many places around the globe you will still find many people using the conventional 12

Places like the United States and Australia, among a few others still prefer this method of time keeping. You find 12 hour time used more commonly in speech because its simply much easier to speak and use without much hesitation, while 24 hours time is preferred in writing.
A time of day written in the 24 hour time is generally expressed like this: 1543 and would be spoke “fifteen forty three”. However there are many different variations as to how the time can be expressed. Sometimes, you’ll commonly see a colon inserted into the time to break the hours from the minutes, like this: 15:43
A leading zero is often expressed in 24 hour time that is less than 10. The zero is most commonly used when telling military time, like this: 0312 and would be spoke “zero three hundred twelve hours” or “oh three hundred twelve hours”.
But when expressed in traditional 12 hour time, 0312 becomes 3:12AM
In 24 hour time, the day always begins at 00:00 and the last minute of every day begins at 23:59. However, when it is appropriate, the expression 24:00 is used to describe the end of the beginning of a day. Just keep in mind that 00:00 and 24:00 are the exact same time when referring to 24 hour time notation.
With that said, 24:00 is mainly used to refer to the exact end of a day or time interval like store hours. A typical stores hours could read something like: “open 9:00 to 24:00″ and that would the store is open from 9:00AM to Midnight. Whereas “Zero” or “00:00″ in this case would confuse people instead of help them understand the stores hours of operation.
A lot of times when a police officer takes a report and the person says the event happened at Midnight, the officer will always put down 23:59 or 00:01 to avoid confusion when the time is converted to 12 hour time later.
And in really rare cases, you might find 24 hour time actually extending past 24:00, such as 24:01 or 26:30. This often pertains to business hours and has only been observed in places like Japan and Hong Kong when business hours actually extend past midnight. This could be due to the business being a bar or club, a late night TV production studio or or similar businesses.
In computers and technology, most computers actually run on 24 hour time internally yet switch out the display of the time to 12 hour when the appropriate language settings are chose. For instance, if you live in the US and you select English as your language of choice, then the computer will automatically display the 12 hour time format. But you can easily switch the time to either format if you’d like.
In short, 24 hour time helps to keep our world on track without confusion.

Not many people know this, but Military Time goes back thousands of years except back then, it wasn’t called “Military Time”. It has gone by many different names over the years but only recently in 1917 did the British and Canadian Militaries start using the 24 hour clock. Before then, the world pretty much ran on the 12 hour system that we most commonly know today.
Imagine back thousands of years ago to the time of the Ancient Egyptians. How do you suppose they read time? They actually broke down time into two 12 hour periods. Based off of the sun’s arc in the sky, they were able to tell when high noon was and measure it with what we now know as the 12 hour am/pm time. So I supposed you could say that the Ancient Egyptians were responsible for creating the time we now love and use in our everyday lives.
Yet, it wasn’t until recently that confusion started arising with that type of time system, especially in places like the military, aviation, navigation, tourism, meteorology, astronomy, computing, logistics, emergency services, hospitals and many other professions that require you to be on point, at all times, without confusion. It was at that point that the Military decided to add the two 12 hours systems together and coined what is known as “Military Time”.
The term Military Time is actually a synonym for the 24 hour clock. But what’s funny is this is only largely popular in the United States and Canada because the customary 12 hour time with am/pm suffixes is considered dangerous in many professions, the most notorious obviously being the military, thus how the 24 hour time clock got its nickname. In most other places in the world, you will commonly see the 24 hour clock as a standard practice.
However, there are some slight differences in how civilians tell time and the military. The military always omits the colons you see in something like 4:00am and instead becomes 0400 and would be spoke “oh four hundred hours” or “zero four hundred hours”. This way of telling time is not exclusive to the military though, many people around the world have adapted this way of telling time as second nature to them and use it every day, just as you would hear it in the military.
There are still some major differences between typical 24 hour time usage and military usage.
- The first hour in military time is always “00″ no matter what, where it can be interpreted either as “00″ or “24″ in civilian usage.
- Written military time does not contain a colon or any time separator of any kind.
- Most military messages include the time zone. For example, 4:00AM Eastern Standard Time would be expressed “0400R” and spoken “oh four hundred Romeo”
- Universal Time (aka Greenwhich Mean Time) is refered to as zone Z or Zulu. This is used most often when crossing multiple time zones.
- The leading zeros are not pronounced in civilian time. For example, 0452 would be spoken “four fifty two” instead of “oh four fifty two hundred hours”.
For whatever reason you need to use military time, just know that it is the most precise and accurate way we have to measure time without confusion today.
